A surprise bump-in with Gul Kaka, a decades-old fixture at the 137 year old Nedous Hotel in Gulmarg and an avid lover of horses. Our team was out for a photoshoot, but then, Gul Kaka's wisdom spoke.

Currently on loom at Jos and Fine, this hand-knotted silk portrait is a tribute to Guru Ji—Nirmal Singh Ji Maharaj, a revered spiritual beacon whose presence has transformed countless lives across India and the world. Known for his healing aura, unspoken clairvoyance, and the divine practice of "Simran" (chanting of the holy name), Guru Ji remains a profound source of stillness and awakening for millions.

After deep consultations with devotees and seekers, and many weeks of artistic and technical deliberation, we began work on this singular textile—crafted not as a reproduction, but as a reverential homage.

Woven with over 24 precisely dyed silk shades, this is a feat of high textile portraiture. Each square inch holds 576 hand-knotted silk knots, coming together to form a photo-realistic likeness of Guru Ji. The progress you see represents over 2.5 months of continuous weaving, with approximately 75% completed.

The carpet portrait is expected to be finished in the coming fortnight. A very limited number of these portrait carpets will be woven—available strictly on a first-come, first-serve basis, given the intensive extremely challenging craftsmanship involved.

We travel to the home of Mohammad Ahsan , one of Jos & Fine's most experienced craftsmen who lives in a pristine village in north Kashmir, where a Himalayan glacial water stream meanders around his house and the little vegetable garden he has laid.

His specialisation: pictorial carpets - the toughest of all designs wherein an artisan must replicate photographs into carpets. Here, one sees a pictorial carpet underway of the Chinar Bagh (garden of the mighty Chinar trees in Srinagar) during fall season with hues of rust, crimson, orange and so on.

QUALITY & TRANSPARENCY | Each carpet of ours carries a permanent QR Code on the reverse side. Scan it and it'll open up all technical details, design information, weaver details, etc.

Each Jos and Fine carpet is tested by the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology comes with a GI (Geographical Indicator Tag) - a non-removable QR code that is fused onto the reverse side of each carpet.

Upon scanning, it opens up a digital certificate presenting the authenticity of the carpet being handmade, the materials used, the knottage (fineness), name of the weaver, etc. A certificate for life - one that can also be used to value the carpet decades down the line.

Our Pet Project Triumphs | PHOTO-REALISTIC CARPET PORTRAITS

While portrait carpets have been attempted in Kashmir and other parts of India, none have truly achieved a perfect “THAT'S IT!” moment—until now.

Our initial run with existing patrons has been a success and our book is open to taking orders.

We decided to make it happen using both modern tech and tradition.

Tech: We used the latest software to work on each pixel (each would translate to a hand-knot later) for creating a balanced palette and an accurate Taleem (weaving code).

Tradition: We used the almost-extinct Kashmir single-knot (Senneh) carpet weaving technique that results in sharper and more detailed features in a carpet.

The result: Only on close inspection, one notices that it's hand-knotted and not painted. We knot, we don't paint. We knot a minimum of 576 times in each square inch.

The portrait in this video measures a mere 2 feet by 3 feet within which is contained all the incredible detail one sees.

Our order book is currently open for patrons who'd like to commission portraits of individuals/families.

Our portrait service is limited to 9-12 pieces per year.

INDIA's FIRST ILLUSTRATED CONSTITUTION | 4 YEARS CRAFT TIME
Crafted over 4 years by Nand Lal Bose and team. Comissioned by Prime Minister Nehru, India's first illustrated Constitution. Currently housed in a special helium-filled case at the Parliament House in New Delhi.

Nandalal Bose was Mahatma Gandhi’s favoured artist of choice. He was part of the Bengal School of Art which itself formed a part of the larger Bengal Renaissance, aimed at making a radical departure from British or colonial forms.

The stunning calligraphy that accompanies the illustrations was done by Prem Behari Narain Raizada, who in lieu of payment, asked Nehru if he could sign his name in the manuscript. His pen name ‘Prem’ is visible on all pages of the manuscript. Similarly, all the artists’s signatures dot the borders of the pages.
